Scene Script
Act III, Scene I:
Setting: The setting for this scene is a plaza in a town in Paraguay. Plazas were very common as a result of the strong Spanish architectural influence in Paraguay. Plazas are places meant for people to gather. In this scene there are many everyday people, and Brazilian foot soldiers. This is a perfect place for the fight between Mercutio, Romeo (Emilio) and Tybalt.
MERCUTIO, his page, and BENVOLIO enter the plaza with other men.
BENVOLIO
Te ruego, buen Mercutio, dejanos regresar a nuestro base militar. (I’m begging you, good Mercutio, let us return to our military base.) The summer sun burns bright and the Capulets are patrolling the streets. If they see us, blood will certainly be spilled. The Brazilians become angry and hot-blooded in the summer.
MERCUTIO
You are like one of those men who walks into a bar, slams his musket on the table, and then says, “I pray I will have no need of this.” But by the time he orders his second dark rum, he pulls his musket on the barman for no reason at all.
BENVOLIO
!No!, ?De veras? No soy asi. (Am I such a man?)
MERCUTIO
?!Que!?, eres un enojon.(Come on, you can be as angry as any guy when you’re in the mood). When someone does the smallest thing to make you angry, !te vuelves loco! (You go crazy.) And when you’re in the mood to get angry, you find something to get angry about.
BENVOLIO
So? We are at war! This is the time for anger, for fighting, !para la patria! (For our country!)
MERCUTIO
If there were two men like you, soon there’d be none because the two of you would kill each other. You would fight with a man if he had one more whisker or one less whisker in his moustache than you have in your beard. You’ll fight with a man who wears green simply because it is the color of the Brazilian flag. Only you would look for a fight like that. Your head is as full of fights as an egg is full of yolk, but your head has been beaten like scrambled eggs from so much fighting. !Estas chiflado!. (You’re crazy!) You started a fight with a man who coughed in the street because he woke up a dog that was sleeping in the sun. Didn’t you argue it out with your commander because his beard was crooked? And with a poor cobbler for tying the new shoes he made with old laces? And yet you’re the one who wants to teach me about restraint!
TYBALT, PETRUCHIO, and CAPULETS enter.
BENVOLIO
!Dios mío!, aquí viene el ejército Brasileño.
MERCUTIO
Well well, I care not.
TYBALT
(to PETRUCCIO and others) Follow me closely, I’ll talk to them. (to the MONTAGUES) Good afternoon, señores. I’d like to have a word with one of you.
MERCUTIO
?Sola una palabra? (Just one word?) Put it together with something else. Make it a sentence and a blow.
TYBALT
You’ll find me ready enough to do that, sir, if you give me a reason.
MERCUTIO
Can’t you find a reason without my giving you one?
TYBALT
Mercutio, tu siempre andas con Romeo, al pasar el tiempo.
MERCUTIO
“?pasar el tiempo?” Who do you think we are, musicians? If we look like musicians to you, you can expect to nothing but noise. (touching the blade of his sword) This is my best song. I’ll use it to make you dance!”
BENVOLIO
!Calmense! (calm down)We’re talking here in a plaza. Either go someplace private, or talk it over rationally, or just go away. Out here everybody can see us.
MERCUTIO
Men’s eyes were made to see things, so let them watch. I will not budge.
ROMEO enters.
TYBALT
Entonces, que dios te bendiga. (well, then, may peace be with you.) Here is the man I’m looking for.
TYBALT
Romeo, there’s only one thing I can call you. Eres un villano.(you are a villain)
ROMEO
Tybalt, I have a reason to love you that lets me put aside la ira I should feel and excuse that insult. No soy un villano. Entonces, me voy. Puedo ver que no sabes quien soy. ( I am not a villain. So, goodbye, I can tell you do not know who I am)
TYBALT
Your words are vapor that cannot fix the harm you’ve done to me. Se un hombre, y saca tu espada.and draw your sword.
ROMEO
No peleare contigo. (I will not fight with you) I love you more than you can understand until you know the reason why I love you. And so, good Brasileño—which is a name I love like my own name—you should be satisfied with what I say.
MERCUTIO
This calm submission is dishonorable and vile. The thrust of a sword will end this surrender. (takes out sword) Tybalt, will you fight me?
TYBALT
Si! of course! (takes out musket)
MERCUTIO
No, un soldado verdadero pelea con honor,(no, a real soldier fights honorably) without his musket!
Well, at least that is the way in Paraguay.
Lay your musket down and let us fight like men!
TYBALT
Agreed! (drops musket)
ROMEO
Noble Mercutio, put your sword away. Stop this madness!
MERCUTIO
(Ignores Romeo and says to TYBALT) Come! fight me or die!
MERCUTIO and TYBALT fight
ROMEO
(drawing his sword) Draw your sword, Benvolio. Let’s beat down their weapons. Caballeros, (gentlemen) stop this fight. Tybalt, Mercutio, both of you are going to start a war in our soil! Stop, Tybalt. Stop, good Mercutio.
ROMEO tries to break up the fight. TYBALT reaches under ROMEO’s arm and stabs MERCUTIO.
PETRUCHIO
Take cover Tybalt! Those dogs from Paraguay might shoot at us
TYBALT, PETRUCHIO, and the other CAPULETS take cover.
CAPULETS start firing towards the MONTAGUES
MONTAGUES return fire
TYBALT fires at MERCUTIO
MERCUTIO staggers back and leans against a palm tree, he is grasping his chest
BENVOLIO
Are you hurt?
MERCUTIO
Yes, yes. It’s a scratch, just a scratch.(groans) But it’s enough. Where is my page? Go, boy. Get me a doctor.
MERCUTIO'S PAGE exits left.
ROMEO
(sees MERCUTIO, drops his musket and runs towards him)
Se valiente Mercutio. (Have courage Mercutio.) The wound can’t be that bad.
MERCUTIO
(He removes his hand from his wound revealing lots of blood)
No, it’s not as deep as a well, or as wide as a church door, but it’s enough. Ask for me tomorrow, and you’ll find a grave man. !Que una plaga caiga sobre tus dos casas! (May a plague strike both your houses!) I can’t believe that dog, Tybalt, could scratch me to death! Romeo, why did you come in between us? He struck me from under your arm.
ROMEO
I thought it was the right thing to do.
No quería que nadie se dañara. ( I didn’t want anyone to get hurt)
MERCUTIO
Ay!, niño tonto, niño cobarde. No quisiera que nadie se dañaria? !Esto es una guerra! Y ahora por tus tonterias aqui estoy, muriendo. ( Oh, dumb boy, cowardly boy. You didn’t want anyone to get hurt? This is a war! And now because of your foolishness I lay here dying.) May a plague strike both your houses! I’m done for.
MERCUTIO dies
BENVOLIO
Romeo, Romeo, brave Mercutio is dead! His brave spirit has floated up to heaven!
ROMEO
(ROMEO stands up and shouts to the Capulets)
Curse you Tybalt!
BENVOLIO
Keep your head down as they might shoot you.
ROMEO
Tybalt’s alive and victorious, and Mercutio’s dead? Enough with mercy and consideration. It’s time for rage to guide my actions. Now, Tybalt, you can call me “villano” the way you did before. Mercutio’s soul is floating right above our heads. Either you, or I, or both of us have to go with him.
TYBALT reloads
TYBALT
It is you who goes to hell with Mercutio!
ROMEO
This fight will decide who dies.
ROMEO runs to TYBALT as he misses his last shot. As TYBALT reloads, ROMEO got closer and shot him point blank. TYBALT stands in the middle of the plaza for a moment and then falls down.
BENVOLIO
Romeo, get out of here! Reinforcements are coming and Tybalt is dead. Don’t stand there shocked. So get out of here!
ROMEO
!Ay, que mala suerte! (Oh what bad luck.)
BENVOLIO
Why are you waiting!?
ROMEO exits right.
The REINFORCEMENTS enter left and fight in battle.
PARAGUAYAN REINFORCEMENTS
The man who killed Mercutio, which way did he go? Tybalt, that murderer, which way did he run?
BENVOLIO
Tybalt is lying over there.
BRAZILIAN ARMY
(to TYBALT) Get up and take cover Mighty Tybalt! What are you doing laying on the floor?
The town council members enter
Council member #1
!Dios mio! (My God!), How did this battle start?
BENVOLIO
Oh, good sir, I can tell you everything about the unfortunate circumstances of this deadly fight. Over there Tybalt is lying dead. He killed your relative, brave Mercutio, and then young Romeo killed him.
CAPULET runs onto stage along with ROMEO’s commanding officer.
CAPULET
Tybalt! !Mi sobrino! (My nephew!) He was my brother in law’s son! Oh, my nephew is dead!
Council member #2
Benvolio, who started this fight?
BENVOLIO
Tybalt la empezó antes de que Romeo lo mató. (Tybalt started the fight before he was killed by Romeo.) Romeo spoke to Tybalt politely and told him how silly this argument was. He said all of this gently and calmly, kneeling down out of respect. But he could not make peace with Tybalt, who was in an angry mood and wouldn’t listen to talk about peace. Tybalt and Mercutio began to fight each other fiercely, lunging at one another and dodging each other’s blows. Romeo cried out, “Stop, my friends. Break it up.” Then he jumped in between them and forced them to put their swords down. But Tybalt reached under Romeo’s arm and thrust his sword into brave Mercutio. Then Tybalt took cover and started firing at us. But pretty soon Romeo was overcome with the desire for revenge. As quick as lightning, they started fighting. Before I could break up the fight, Tybalt was killed. Romeo ran away when Tybalt fell dead.
Te digo la verdad, lo juro por mi vida. (I’m telling you the truth, I swear on my life.)
ROMEO’S COMMANDING OFFICER
Romeo killed Tybalt. Tybalt killed Mercutio. Who should now pay the price for Mercutio’s life? And for his actions, Romeo is hereby court martialed from the Paraguayan Military.
I’m involved in your rivalry. Mercutio was my relative, and no he lies dead . I’ll punish you so harshly that you’ll regret causing me this loss.I don’t care if he is Lopez’s son any more. I won’t listen to pleas or excuses. You can’t get out of trouble by praying or crying, so don’t bother. Tell Romeo to turn in his badges immediately, or else, if he is found, he will be arrested. Take away this body, and do what I say. Showing mercy by pardoning killers only causes more murders.
They exit.
Act III, Scene II
Setting: Juliet’s room in Brazil. Fancy and has a queen sized bed. Has nice art paintings around her room.
JULIET enters alone.
Deseo que el sol se apurara y dejar la noche llegar inmediatamente.(I wish the sun can speed it up and night would come instantly.) When the night’s here and everyone is sleeping, Romeo will jump into my arms, and our secret will be safe. Beauty makes it possible for couples to see how to make love in the dark. Or else love is blind, and night is the perfect time. I wish night would come so I can see Romeo and lose my virginity. Let the blood rushing to my cheeks be calmed. In the darkness, let this shy virgin learn the mysterious act of lovemaking so that it seems innocent, modest, and true. Come, night. Come, Romeo. Give me my Romeo. And when I die, turn him into stars and form a constellation in his image. His face will make the heavens so beautiful that the world will fall in love with the night and forget about day. I have bought the mansion of love, but I haven’t moved in yet. I belong to Romeo now, but he hasn’t taken possession of me yet.
The NURSE enters with the rope ladder in her pouch.
Aqui viene mi niñera y ella trae noticias.(Here comes my Nurse, and she brings news.) Every voice that mentions Romeo’s name sounds amazing. What’s the news? Is that the rope ladder Romeo told you to pick up?
NURSE
Si, es la escalera de cuerda.( Yes, this is the rope ladder.)
JULIET
?Que son las noticias?(What’s the news?) Why are you sad?
NURSE
!Dios mio! Es un dia triste. Esta muerto! !Estamos arruinados, arruinados!Que dia tan horrible! Ha sido matado! Esta muerto. (My god! It’s a sad day! He’s dead. He’s dead! We’re ruined, ruined! What an awful day! He’s been killed. He’s dead!)
JULIET
My Romeo is gone! Gone forever!
NURSE
!Romeo, que hombre tan odioso! (Romeo, what a hateful man!) Oh, Romeo, Romeo, who ever would have thought it would be Romeo?
JULIET
?Que tipo de demonio eres que me torturas así? (What kind of demon are you to torture me like this?) This is as bad as the tortures of hell. Has Romeo committed suicide? Just say “Si” and I will turn more poisonous than the snake with the dark eye. I will no longer be myself if you tell me Romeo killed himself. If he’s been killed, say “Si.” If not, say “No.” This will determine my joy or my pain.
NURSE
Vi su herida con mis propios ojos. (I saw his wound with my own eyes) God bless that cut, here on his cold chest. A pity corpse.Pale as ashes and drenched in blood. I felt sick when I saw the body.
JULIET
Ay, mi corazon se esta rompiendo. (Oh, my heart is breaking.) I will never let my eyes see another thing again!. I’ll give my vile body back to the earth. I’ll never move again. My body and Romeo’s will be together in one sad coffin.
NURSE
Oh, Tybalt, Tybalt era un caballero tan honorable. (Oh, Tybalt, Tybalt, he was such an honorable gentleman.) I wish I died first just so I couldn’t watch Tybalt’s death.
JULIET
How did this madness happen? Has Romeo fallen, and is Tybalt dead too? Tybalt was my dearest cousin. Romeo was even dearer to me as my husband. Let the trumpets play the song of doom, because who can live if those two are gone?
NURSE
Tybalt is gone, and Romeo has been banished. Romeo slaughtered Tybalt, and his punishment was banishment.
JULIET
!Dios mio! (My God!) Did Romeo’s hand shed Tybalt’s blood?
NURSE
Si, es verdad. Maldito dia pero ya lo ha hecho .( Yes, he has. Curse this day but he has).
JULIET START HERE
Oh, he’s like a snake disguised as a flower. I hate him, yet he seemed the most amazing man. He’s is the exact opposite of my imagination. He’s a saint who should be damned. Oh nature, what were you doing in hell? Why did you put the soul of a criminal in the perfect body of a man? Oh, I can’t believe the deepest evil lurked inside something so beautiful!
NURSE
En los hombres, no hay confianza, no hay fe ni integridad. Todos mienten. (There is no trust, no faith, no honesty in men. All of them lie.) They’re all wicked. Ay ay ay, Where’s my servant? Give me some brandy. These griefs, these pains, these sorrows make me old. Shame on Romeo!
JULIET
I hope sores cover your tongue for a wish like that! Shame does not belong with Romeo. He deserves only honor, complete honor. Oh, I was wrong to be angry at him.
NURSE
?Honrarás el hombre quien mato a tu primo?( Are you going to say good things about the man who killed your cousin?)
JULIET
Am I supposed to say bad things about my own husband? My poor husband, who will sing your praises when I, your wife of three hours, have been saying awful things about you? But why did you kill my cousin? Probably because my cousin the villain would have killed my husband. I’m not going to cry. I would cry with joy that Romeo is alive, but I should cry because Tybalt is dead. My husband, whom Tybalt wanted to kill, is alive. Tybalt, who wanted to kill my husband, is dead. All this is comforting news. Why, then, should I cry? There is news worse than the news that Tybalt is dead, news that makes me want to die. I would be glad to forget about it, but it weighs on my memory. “Tybalt is dead, and Romeo has been banished.”That banishment is worse than the murder of ten thousand Tybalts. Tybalt’s death would be bad enough if that was all. Maybe pain likes to have company and can’t come without bringing more pain. But to say that Tybalt’s dead and then say, “Romeo has been banished.” To say that is like everyone were to be dead. “Romeo has been banished.” That news brings infinite death. No words can express the pain. Where are my father and my mother, Nurse?
NURSE
Estan llorando sobre cadaver de Tybalt. Vas a juntarte con ellos? ( They are crying over Tybalt’s corpse. Are you going to join them?)
JULIET
Are they washing out his wounds with their tears? I’ll cry my tears for Romeo’s banishment when their tears are dry. Pick up this rope ladder. This poor rope ladder, it’s useless now because Romeo has been exiled. He made this rope ladder to be a highway to my bed, but I am a virgin, and I will die a virgin. Let’s go, rope ladder. Nurse, I’m going to lie in my wedding bed. And death, not Romeo, can take my virginity!
NURSE
Vete a la recamara. Buscaré a Romeo para que el te consuele.( Go to your bedroom. I’ll find Romeo to comfort you.) I know his location. Listen, your Romeo will come tonight. I’ll go to him. He’s hiding out in Friar Lawrence’s cell.
JULIET
(giving her a ring) Find him! Give this ring to my true knight! And tell him to come here to say his last goodbye.
They Exit
